Spray foam is not only recognized as a thermal insulation, with the National Standards being referenced right in the Building Code, SPF can provide thermal insulation, air barrier system, vapour barrier and drainage plane all in one application when used in cavity wall construction.
Spray foam insulation's air sealing properties are the primary reason for its superiority over fiberglass. Fiberglass, no matter how well it is installed, does not provide an air barrier and allows air to move through it. This allows the two climates (inside conditioned air, and outside unconditioned air) to combine and create potential condensation inside walls and building assemblies.
Both open-cell and closed-cell foam are great insulators. Both provide an excellent thermal barrier and air barrier. How they differ is that closed-cell foam is waterproof and will not let water move through it. Open-cell foam will allow water to move through it and dry.
Spray foam insulation ideally needs to be installed by a professional. Spray polyurethane application requires complex equipment and a skilled installer with training in the safe and proper installation of the polyurethane system.
Spray-applied closed-cell polyurethane foam is the only insulation material that adds structural integrity throughout the wall system. Testing shows spray-applied polyurethane foam insulation between wood- and steel-stud wall panels, increases rack and shear strength, two to three times compared with standard timber frame components with glass fibre insulation.
Mould requires three things to grow: moisture, warm temperatures and a food source. The use of spray foam as insulation eliminates surface condensation and reduces the potential to accumulate moisture. It also eliminates air movement within the wall cavity preventing unwanted moisture intrusion and related mould issues.
Spray foam insulation may be the best thing for the environment in an array of environmentally-friendly products. It emits no CO2 of its own while it reduces heating and cooling related emissions by about 50% for new constructions and by even more in certain retrofit situations.
A two-part mixture is applied by trained professionals to the surface to be insulated. The spray mixture expands rapidly to fill all cracks and voids, completely and permanently adhering to wood, masonry, metal, concrete, and most other construction materials.
Spray foam insulation is professionally installed at the same point in the construction cycle as other types of insulation. That is, using traditional building techniques, spray foam should be installed after the rough plumbing, electrical wiring, and heating and air conditioning ducts have been installed, but before the interior walls are completed in new construction. In some cases spray foam also can be applied in older buildings or structures, to the inside of roofs and under floors after construction has been completed.
Your building does need to be ventilated in order to maximize indoor air quality (moisture levels and contaminant levels). Most design professionals will advise you to seal the structure as tight as possible and provide the necessary ventilation through the heating and air conditioning system. Many systems employ a highly energy efficient "air exchanger" which is designed to pre-condition (either warm or cool) the incoming outside air with the outgoing exhaust air. In this manner, you can build an extremely energy efficient exterior shell using high-performance spray foam insulation while still providing controlled and energy efficient ventilation.
